It ruled for several decades, spawning everything from the “ Airplane!” creators’ own “Naked Gun” franchise - to me, the media-age Marx Brothers-worthy masterpiece of the form - to the Wayans brothers’ “ Scary Movie” franchise to several dozen comedies, from “ Hot Shots!” to “ National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon 1” to “ Not Another Teen Movie,” that skewered genre after genre after genre with the puckish satiric glee that most of them deserved. The “Airplane!” school of chock-full-of-jokes conceptual parody, with its fourth-wall-smashing stupido-smart goofiness, had a pretty impressive run. Unlike more gung-ho war movies, military movies are often more concerned with the day-to-day lives of soldiers than spectacular battles and bloody sieges. Military movies have to strike a difficult balance and can often become quite dour as a result. While there are a lot of war movies that highlight the horrors of armed conflict, some great military satires have managed to mine dark humor from the same subject. Lesser-known military satires like Buffalo Soldiers and Jarhead offer realistic depictions of military life while providing social commentary on war and futility. The best military movies strike a balance between satire and observation, criticizing the military-industrial complex while humanizing soldiers and civilians. Military movies often focus on the mundane and traumatic aspects of soldier life, portraying its crushing repetition and occasional violence.
